Interuniversitair Micro-Electronica Centrum

Smart Materials and Manufacturing

The Interuniversitair Micro-Electronica Centrum is a world leading research center for nano-electronics and digital technologies. Within this organization the focus on ‘Smart Materials and Manufacturing’ is within the ‘Unit Process and Modules’ department where innovative research and development is done related to current and future materials for logic and memory technologies. The materials studied comprise metals, dielectrics and semiconductors, ranging from conventional Silicon (Germanium), magnetic and piezo-electric materials, transition metal dicalchogenides as well as more exotic topological insulators and Weyl semimetals. In addition to materials research, an active domain comprises also the development of advanced process steps and modules like cleaning and passivation, (epitaxial) deposition (physical and chemical), chemical mechanical polishing, nanoscale patterning (lithography and etch) using state-of-the-art tools as required for advanced electron and spinbased logic, memory and quantum computing technologies. The activities include opportunities for experimental as well as modeling collaboration, in close collaboration with academia and leading edge industrial partners.
